A Somesville State of Mind

A few days before Christmas, I took the family on a short ride down to a gorgeous little town called Somesville, Maine. Somesville is the earliest village on Mount Desert Island. The village was established by Abraham Somes who was the first settler on the island in 1761. It is located on the north end of Somes Sounda fjord-like finger cutting deep into the heart of MDI. With Mountain Ranges to the East and West, a river to the North, and the Atlantic to the South.

The beauty of this historic little town is undeniable. The architecture of the village itself is exquisite. So, much so that the entire town is considered an Historic District.  And the stately homes which line the sound make for the perfect “get-away” spots, no matter the time of year. Rivers, lakes, and ponds all flow freely into the sound which stretches almost 10 miles out past The Cranberry Islands to the Ocean beyond.

In short, pretty much THE perfect place to visit. Or, live. If you are so inclined!
